Press Release
Hotel's "Mottainai" (wastefulness) is being passed on to animals, and efforts are continuing to reduce food waste and promote local recycling.
THE KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT YOKOHAMA (Address: 1-1-3 Minatomirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture / General Manager: Yasutoshi Abe) will continue its initiative in collaboration with Yokohama City and the Yokohama Green Association to provide fruits, vegetables, and other food items that are not consumed at the buffet to Yokohama Zoo Zoorasia.

(Yokohama Night Zoo "Night Zoorasia" in the summer of 2025)
This initiative was first implemented in the summer of 2025 and received a great response from visitors. Now, with the participation of multiple new hotels, the circle of collaboration has expanded and it will be implemented as part of a regular program in the spring of 2026. This is an initiative aimed at reducing food waste and promoting resource circulation within the city, and realizing a sustainable society together with the local community.
At our hotel, we strive to minimize waste when serving breakfast and banquet buffets through thorough ingredient management and creative presentation methods, but sometimes ingredients are wasted after the designated consumption time has passed due to hygiene reasons. We regard these as "resources" and want to recycle them within Yokohama City, which is why this collaboration was realized.
Furthermore, this initiative and other local recycling practices have been recognized by the Yokohama City Resources Recycling Bureau for their cutting-edge efforts in the management of business waste discharge and storage conditions, going beyond legal compliance, and have been praised as one of the reasons behind the zoo receiving the highest rating of "three stars (★★★)."By watching the animals enjoy their snacks, we hope to create opportunities for visitors to experience food waste reduction and resource recycling up close.
■Outline of collaboration with Yokohama City and the Yokohama Green Association, a public interest incorporated foundation
[Details of the initiative] Fruits and vegetables not consumed within a set time at a hotel buffet are refrigerated and donated to Yokohama Zoo's Zoorasia. They are used as snacks for the animals, and through guides and exhibits, this will help promote understanding of reducing food waste.

■ Background of the initiative : Turning lost food into a local resource
Our hotel strives to reduce food waste through proper food management and innovative presentation methods, but we have faced the issue of food that cannot be served due to hygiene standards. This initiative, which makes effective use of such food in the local area, is in line with our spirit of "local respect" and is positioned as a symbolic measure of the hotel's sustainability activities. We will continue to promote hotel operations that coexist with the local community by creating new value through resource circulation.
