Initiative to reduce food waste: Recycle leftover food from buffets as treats for animals

From August 2025, we will collaborate with Yokohama City and the Yokohama Green Association, a public interest incorporated foundation.

THE KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT YOKOHAMA (Address: 1-1-3 Minatomirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture / General Manager: Yasutoshi Abe), which will celebrate its 5th anniversary in September 2025, has partnered with Yokohama City and the Yokohama Green Association to donate fruits, vegetables, and other food items not consumed at the buffet to Yokohama Zoo Zoorasia (Address: 1175-1 Kamishirone-cho, Asahi-ku, Yokohama / Director: Koichi Murata). This is an initiative to reduce food waste and promote the recycling of resources within Yokohama City.

Our hotel offers buffet meals for banquets, including the "Breakfast Buffet," "Chef's Dining Buffet x World Gourmet Collection," and "Premium Buffet KIWAMI," for exclusive use in banquet halls. Our dishes, featuring rare ingredients and unique cooking methods, are highly acclaimed. While we strive to minimize waste through thorough ingredient management and creative presentation methods, we are plagued by the issue of food waste, as food cannot be reused after the designated consumption period for sanitation reasons. Our efforts to recycle resources within Yokohama City align with THE KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT YOKOHAMA 's spirit of local respect, leading to the decision to collaborate.

The fruits, vegetables, and other food items donated to Yokohama Zoo Zoorasia will be used as snacks for the Indian elephants and chimpanzees at the Yokohama Night Zoo "Night Zoorasia," which will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, and "Dream Night at the Zoo," which will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025.

[Details of the initiative] Pineapples, oranges, and other fruits and vegetables not consumed at the hotel's buffet will be refrigerated and donated to Yokohama Zoo Zoorasia. They will be used as snacks for the animals at a night event being held this summer. During the event, zookeepers will provide a special guided tour, allowing visitors to see how the animals enjoy the fruit-infused ice cubes, and a panel exhibit will explain the story of how food gets from the hotel to the zoo. This will create an opportunity for visitors to deepen their understanding of reducing food waste and recycling resources.
